How It Works

THE PROCESS

But, once you get the hang of buying local, natural meat, you’ll never go back! And of course, feel free to contact us any time with questions.  Sign up for our newsletter  and follow on Facebook so you can be notified of when new product is available for sale and pickup days/times.  Please see below for details on the ordering process:

FAQ – PORK

To sell whole and half pigs in Michigan, the pigs are required to be reserved/sold to the customer before processing, and the customer is required to pay for processing.  In this way, we are essentially raising the pig for you, in a humane and natural way, and then you get to choose how to have it processed.

Do you sell whole pigs or cuts?
Right now we are taking reservations for half and whole pigs for the 2017 season. Soon we will also have individual cuts for sale.

How much do they cost?
The price varies depending on weight. We charge $3.75 / lb hanging weight plus processing.   Most of our pigs hang between 150 and 200 pounds, which means the price for a whole pig ranges between $563-$750 plus processing (usually between $100 and $150 depending on how you want your meat cut up and processed, i.e. smoked, cured, ground, etc.).  The price for a half pig ranges between $281 and $375 plus processing (usually between $50 and $75 depending on how you want your meat cut up and processed, i.e. smoked, cured, ground, etc.).    The customer must pay the processing directly to the processor.

Do I get to customize my own pork order?
Yes, you will work directly with the processor (we will help facilitate the process) to determine how you want your meat prepared.  This is when you can choose how much of your meat you want ground up and turned in sausage, what type of sausage you want, how thick you want your pork chops, etc.  If you are the “snout to tail” type who likes to use the whole animal, consider requesting the fat to make lard (for baking, soaps, etc.), the tongue for tacos, blood for blood pudding, bones for bone broth, as well as ears, cheeks, testicles (yum!).

When is the meat available?
We are now taking reservations for half and whole pigs that will be ready fall 2017. Pre-ordering is advisable because we only raise a limited number of pigs and they sell out fast. We will also have individual cuts available soon.
